Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Nymph

The Gold-Ribbed Hare’s Ear is one of the most versatile and widely used nymph patterns in fly fishing. Rather than imitating one specific insect, its rough, buggy profile can suggest mayfly nymphs, caddis larvae, stoneflies, and other aquatic food. It can be fished alone, as part of a two-fly nymph rig, or as a dropper beneath a dry fly, making it productive in streams and rivers throughout the year. Gold-Ribbed Hare’s Ears are commonly tied in sizes 12 through 20, with weighted or bead-head versions used when a faster sink rate is needed. The pattern is generally most effective when the dubbing is left slightly uneven and the guard hairs are picked out to create movement rather than forming a perfectly smooth body.
