Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear
The Gold-Ribbed Hare’s Ear wet fly is a traditional subsurface pattern that represents a wide variety of emerging mayflies, caddisflies, and other aquatic insects. Its rough hare’s-ear body traps air and creates lifelike movement, while the gold rib adds segmentation and durability. The fly can be dead-drifted through riffles and runs, swung across the current, or allowed to rise near the end of the drift to imitate an emerging insect. It is effective for trout and grayling throughout the season, particularly when fish are feeding just below the surface. Commonly tied in sizes 10 through 16, the Gold-Ribbed Hare’s Ear is most effective when the body remains somewhat irregular rather than being trimmed into a perfectly smooth shape.
