Woolly Worm

The Woolly Worm is a classic all-purpose pattern that can imitate a wide range of aquatic insects, including stonefly nymphs, caddis larvae, caterpillars, and other large food sources. It is effective for trout, bass, panfish, and many other freshwater species and can be dead-drifted, swung through the current, or retrieved like a small streamer. Woolly Worms are commonly tied in sizes 6 through 14 and in colors such as black, olive, brown, yellow, and grizzly. Weighted versions are useful for reaching deeper water, while unweighted flies can be fished closer to the surface. The pattern is simple to tie, with the main consideration being evenly palmering the hackle while maintaining a durable, properly proportioned body.
