Mosquito
The Mosquito is a classic dry fly with roots in the Catskill tradition, although its exact originator is unknown. Despite its name, the pattern works as a general imitation of mosquitoes, midges, and small mayflies, making it especially useful on ponds, lakes, spring creeks, and slow-moving water. It is typically tied in sizes 12 through 18 and fished with a natural, drag-free drift to trout and panfish feeding at the surface. The stripped quill body gives the fly effective segmentation but can be fragile, while neatly divided wings and balanced hackle are the main challenges when tying the traditional version.
