Popsicle
The Popsicle is a brightly colored salmon and steelhead attractor developed by George Cook while guiding in Alaska’s Bristol Bay region during the 1980s. It is part of Cook’s Alaskabou series of marabou flies and was originally designed primarily for coho salmon, although it is also effective for Chinook, chum, pink salmon, and steelhead. The fly can be swung through runs, stripped across pools, or retrieved aggressively when fish are willing to chase. Its marabou construction produces strong movement even in slow current, while the flash and contrasting colors help attract fish in stained or glacial water. Popsicles can be tied in several sizes and color combinations, with the main consideration being keeping the marabou mobile and avoiding an excessively bulky fly that becomes difficult to cast.
