Bonefish Special

The Bonefish Special is a classic flats pattern developed by Chico Fernandez for targeting bonefish in very shallow water. Its lightweight construction allows it to land more quietly than patterns tied with heavy bead-chain or dumbbell eyes, making it especially useful when approaching nervous fish on calm, clear flats. The fly can suggest a small shrimp, baitfish, or other crustacean and is typically retrieved with short strips followed by brief pauses. It is commonly tied in sizes 2 through 6 and works best when kept sparse so it sinks naturally and does not create an excessive splash. The Bonefish Special remains a useful alternative to heavier patterns such as the Crazy Charlie or Gotcha when stealth is more important than reaching deep water.
