Ausable Wulff

The Ausable Wulff is a high-floating attractor dry fly created by Adirondack fly tyer Fran Betters in 1964. Developed for the fast, broken water of New York’s West Branch of the Ausable River, it is designed to remain visible and buoyant through riffles, pocket water, and turbulent currents. The pattern can suggest several medium-to-large mayflies, including Hendricksons, March Browns, and Green Drakes, but it is equally useful as a general searching fly when no specific hatch is present. Ausable Wulffs are commonly tied in sizes 10 through 16 and can also support a weighted nymph in a dry-dropper rig. Managing the hair wing and tail while maintaining a compact, well-hackled body are the main challenges when tying the pattern.
