Ant
The Ant is a simple but highly effective terrestrial pattern for trout, panfish, and other surface-feeding species. Natural ants frequently fall from streamside vegetation and can become an important food source, especially during the warmer months and after flying-ant swarms. The pattern is usually fished as a dry fly along banks, beneath overhanging trees, or anywhere terrestrials are likely to enter the water. Because real ants sit low in the surface film, the fly often works best with a natural drift and minimal movement. Ant patterns can be tied with foam, dubbing, or traditional materials, and carrying several sizes in black, cinnamon, and red can help match local insects.
