Western Green Drake

The Western Green Drake is one of the largest and most important mayfly imitations used on trout streams throughout the western United States. It primarily represents mayflies in the genus Drunella, especially Drunella grandis, which often produce brief but memorable hatches from late June through July depending on elevation, water temperature, and runoff. Western Green Drakes are commonly matched with flies in sizes 10 through 14 and can bring large trout to the surface even when little other activity is present. Nymph and emerger patterns are productive before the hatch, while dun and cripple patterns are effective once the insects begin appearing on top. A drag-free drift is usually best, although fishing the fly through riffles and broken water can help conceal minor presentation errors.
