Sulfur Dun
The Sulfur Dun is a dry fly used to imitate the newly emerged adult stage of several closely related mayflies commonly known as Sulfurs. These insects produce important late-spring and early-summer hatches throughout much of the eastern and midwestern United States, often emerging most heavily during the evening. Sulfur Duns are generally tied in sizes 14 through 18 and should be presented with a drag-free dead drift to rising trout. Because the natural insects can vary in size and color from one river to another, carrying several shades and sizes is helpful. Trout frequently concentrate on emergers and crippled insects during a Sulfur hatch, so a dun pattern may be most effective once fish are clearly taking fully emerged adults from the surface.
