Rusty Spinner

The Rusty Spinner is a dependable dry fly used to imitate mayflies that have completed mating and fallen spent onto the water. Because the spinner stage of many mayfly species develops a reddish-brown body, the pattern can match several different hatches simply by changing its size. It is most effective during evening spinner falls, when trout often feed steadily on insects lying motionless in the surface film. Rusty Spinners are commonly tied in sizes 14 through 22 and should be presented with a precise, drag-free drift. Sparse materials and flat, outstretched wings help the fly sit naturally, although its low profile can make it difficult to see in fading light.
