Quill Gordon

The Quill Gordon is one of the most historically important American dry flies. Developed by Theodore Gordon, it imitates Epeorus pleuralis, a large mayfly that produces one of the first major hatches of spring on many Eastern trout streams. The pattern is commonly tied in sizes 12 through 14 and fished with a drag-free drift in riffles, runs, and other moderately fast water. Because Quill Gordons begin emerging below the surface, wet-fly and emerger patterns can be especially effective before trout start taking duns on top. The traditional stripped-quill body creates excellent segmentation but can be fragile, so many tiers reinforce it with fine wire or a thin coating of resin.
