Polar Fiber Minnow

Submitted by @silvercrescentflyfishing

The Polar Fiber Minnow is a great pattern to imitate small baitfish and is effective on just about anything that swims in both fresh and saltwater. This fly can be tied in any color combination, or even multicolored, to imitate any local forage. When tied in all white, it is a deadly pattern fished on dock lights at night. This fly is generally tied in high-tie style to help prevent fouling of the body around the hook shank.

Tying Instructions

  1. 1

Tie in the fluoro fiber for the gills. This is tied in at the bend of the hook, where a tail would typically be tied.

  2. 2

Tie in a small amount of polar fiber. In general, you'll want to use white or a light color for the belly. Wrap forward just slightly. Your bundles should be nicely tapered. In total, you'll do four bundles, so keep your wraps tight and few.

  3. 3

Tie in another bundle of polar fiber and wrap forward slightly. Ensure your bundles are very close to the same size.

  4. 4

    Tie in your flash

  5. 5

Tie in your third bundle. If you're not doing a solid color fly, switch to a darker color. Warp forward again.

  6. 6

Tie in your last bundle of polar fiber. This should generally be the darkest color. Taper the head, whip finish, and cut your thread.

  7. 7

Using your favorite stick on eyes, attach your eyes directly to the polar fiber, right behind the head. The bottom of the eye should be just at or barely above the hook shank.

  8. 8

Apply your epoxy or UV resin along the entire bottom of the fly. Cover your eyes, and just beyond, with the epoxy, and the do the same between the eyes. As you're coating the fibers, try to only smooth the epoxy in the direction of the tail.
