Pale Morning Dun

The Pale Morning Dun is one of the most important mayfly imitations for trout fishing in western North America. The name refers to several closely related mayflies that commonly hatch from late spring through summer, often producing dependable dry-fly fishing on freestone rivers, spring creeks, and tailwaters. PMDs are generally matched with flies in sizes 14 through 18, although smaller patterns may be needed later in the season. The dry fly is best presented with a drag-free dead drift, while nymphs and emergers can be especially effective before and during the hatch. Spinner patterns are also worth carrying because returning adults may bring trout back to the surface later in the day.
