Little Rainbow Trout

The Little Rainbow Trout is a classic bucktail streamer developed by Pennsylvania fly tyer Samuel R. Slaymaker II as part of his series of juvenile trout imitations. It is designed to imitate young rainbow trout and is especially effective in waters where reproducing rainbows provide forage for larger trout, salmon, bass, and other predatory fish. The fly can be stripped through pools and riffles, swung across the current, or trolled in lakes. Little Rainbow Trout streamers are commonly tied on long-shank hooks in sizes 2 through 12, with smaller versions useful shortly after the spawning season and larger flies effective as the young trout grow. Keeping each layer of bucktail sparse and evenly aligned is the main consideration when tying the pattern.
