Humpy
The Humpy is a buoyant attractor dry fly developed for fishing fast, broken water. Most accounts credit Northern California fly tyer Jack Horner, who created an early version known as the Horner Deer Hair Fly during the 1940s. Its heavily hackled, deer-hair construction allows it to float well through riffles and pocket water, making it useful as a searching pattern or as the indicator fly in a dry-dropper rig. Although it does not imitate one insect precisely, it can suggest a mayfly, caddisfly, stonefly, or terrestrial. Humpies are commonly tied in sizes 8 through 18 and in several body colors. Managing the deer hair while forming a compact body and evenly divided wings is the main challenge when tying the pattern.
