Gray Fox
The Gray Fox is a classic Catskill dry fly developed by Preston Jennings to imitate the mayflies historically known by the same name. These insects are closely related to March Browns and generally appear later in the hatch period, often in slightly smaller sizes. The fly is typically fished with a drag-free dead drift in riffles, runs, and other moderately fast water, where the naturals emerge sporadically from late spring into early summer. Gray Fox patterns are commonly tied in sizes 12 through 16 and can also serve as general imitations of tan or brown mayfly duns. Careful proportions, evenly divided wings, and a lightly dressed body are the main considerations when tying the traditional pattern.
