Eastern Green Drake
The Eastern Green Drake is one of the largest and most anticipated mayflies in eastern trout fishing. It imitates Ephemera guttulata, whose heavy emergence can bring even large, cautious trout to the surface. The hatch generally occurs during late spring or early summer and often lasts only about a week, making timing especially important. Green Drake patterns are commonly tied in sizes 8 through 12 and fished with a drag-free drift, although nymphs and emergers can be highly productive before the surface activity begins. The heaviest fishing often occurs near dusk and after dark, when the adult spinners - commonly called Coffin Flies - return to the water. Because the naturals are large and trout often feed aggressively during the hatch, heavier tippet and highly visible dry flies can be useful.
