Blue Dun
The Blue Dun is a classic dry fly designed as a general imitation of newly emerged mayflies. It is especially useful during early-season hatches and can represent Blue-Winged Olives, Hendricksons, Blue Quills, Quill Gordons, and other mayflies when matched to the appropriate size. The fly is best presented with a drag-free dead drift to trout feeding on adult insects at the surface. Blue Duns are commonly carried in sizes 12 through 18, and their versatility makes them a useful searching pattern when the exact mayfly species is unclear. Traditional versions use upright feather wings, which can be challenging to tie neatly but give the pattern its classic profile.
