Black Nose Dace

The Black Nose Dace is a classic bucktail streamer developed by Catskill fly-fishing legend Art Flick to imitate the small dace and chubs found in eastern trout streams. It is an effective general baitfish pattern for trout, bass, landlocked salmon, and other predatory freshwater species. The fly can be stripped through pools and lakes, swung across current, or dead-drifted and allowed to rise at the end of the presentation. Black Nose Daces are commonly tied on long-shank hooks in sizes 4 through 12. The most important consideration when tying the pattern is keeping the layered bucktail wing sparse so the fly maintains a natural profile and moves properly through the water.
