Undertaker

The Undertaker is a popular Atlantic salmon hairwing fly developed by New Brunswick fly tyer Warren Duncan in 1979. Its reputation spread quickly after Duncan and other anglers caught several large salmon on the pattern, and it later became a favorite among steelhead anglers as well. The fly is normally cast across and downstream and fished on a controlled swing through pools and likely holding water. Undertakers can be tied in a wide range of sizes, with larger versions useful in high or cold water and smaller, sparsely dressed flies favored in clearer conditions. Reinforcing the peacock-herl body, forming clean fluorescent tags, and securing the slippery dark hair wing are the main considerations when tying the pattern.
