Surf Candy
The Surf Candy is a highly durable baitfish pattern created by New Jersey fly tyer Bob Popovics. Originally developed for bluefish and striped bass, it was designed to withstand sharp teeth while imitating slender forage such as sand eels, silversides, anchovies, and small mullet. The fly can be retrieved with quick strips, allowed to sink and worked more slowly, or fished through breaking schools of bait. It is effective for striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, bonito, tuna, and many other saltwater predators. Surf Candies can be tied in numerous sizes and colors, while epoxy or UV resin is used to reinforce the body and improve durability. Keeping the materials sparse and applying an even resin coating are the main considerations when tying the pattern.
