Skupade
The Skupade is a simple steelhead hairwing built with a black chenille body, natural deer-hair tail and wing, and a contrasting grizzly hackle collar. It is an attractor rather than a recognized imitation of a particular food organism and is intended to be swung across and downstream through steelhead holding water. The primary tying considerations are keeping the deer-hair components sparse, forming an even chenille body, and avoiding excessive thread pressure that causes the wing to flare.

Tying Instructions
-
1
Secure the hook in the vise, start the black thread behind the eye, and lay a smooth thread foundation rearward to the tail tie-in point.
-
2
Clean and align a small bunch of natural deer hair, then tie it on top of the shank as a short tail.
-
3
Tie in the black chenille at the rear of the body and advance the thread toward the front of the hook.
-
4
Wrap the chenille forward in close, touching turns to form an even body, then secure and trim the excess.
-
5
Prepare a grizzly hackle feather and tie it in immediately in front of the chenille body.
-
6
Fold the hackle fibers rearward and wrap the feather to form a sparse collar, then secure and trim the stem.
-
7
Clean and align another bunch of natural deer hair and tie it on top of the hook as a sparse wing extending approximately to the end of the tail.
-
8
Trim the deer-hair butts at an angle, cover them with thread, and form a neat tapered black head.
-
9
Whip finish and apply head cement or clear varnish.
