Roger's Fancy
Roger’s Fancy is a traditional hairwing pattern used for Atlantic salmon and steelhead. It is normally cast across and downstream and fished on a controlled swing through pools, runs, and likely holding water. The fly’s bright green body and contrasting yellow-and-green throat make it a useful attractor in moderate or slightly stained flows, while its gray fox wing maintains a relatively natural profile. Roger’s Fancy is commonly tied on salmon hooks in sizes 2 through 8, with larger versions used in heavier water and smaller, sparsely dressed flies favored under clearer conditions. Keeping the dubbed body even and the hair wing sparse, secure, and properly aligned are the main considerations when tying the pattern.
