Pass Lake
The Pass Lake, also known as the Pass Lake Special, is a classic wet fly developed during the 1930s by Reverend E. Stubenvoll of Clintonville, Wisconsin. It was reportedly created for brook trout fishing near Pass Lake in Ontario and was later popularized by Stubenvoll’s son-in-law, Earl Paape. The pattern is especially effective for brook trout but can also produce other trout and panfish. It can be dead-drifted through riffles, swung across the current, or retrieved in lakes and ponds. Pass Lakes are generally tied in sizes 6 through 12, with the main considerations being keeping the calf-tail wing sparse and allowing the soft hackle to move freely in the water.
