Orange Boss

The Orange Boss is a classic West Coast attractor pattern developed for steelhead and salmon fishing on California’s Russian River. Historical references credit the pattern to Harry Hendrickson, although relatively little is documented about its early development. It is commonly fished on a controlled swing through runs and pools, but it can also be stripped or allowed to rise at the end of the presentation. The bright orange body is especially useful in cold, high, or stained water, while its bead-chain eyes help the fly reach the proper depth without making it excessively heavy. Orange Bosses are generally tied in sizes 2 through 6, with the main tying considerations being securing the long tail, forming an even body, and keeping the black collar sparse enough to move freely.
