Night Hawk
The Night Hawk is a classic Atlantic salmon fly credited to American architect and angler Stanford White and traced to Canada during the 1880s. It is normally cast across and downstream and fished on a controlled swing, although sparse low-water versions can also be riffling-hitched across the surface. The pattern remains especially popular on the clear salmon rivers of Iceland and eastern Canada, where smaller flies are often preferred during low summer flows. Night Hawks are commonly tied in sizes 8 through 12, with larger versions useful when additional visibility or depth is needed. Forming a smooth silver body and keeping the black wing sparse, secure, and properly aligned are the main considerations when tying the pattern.
