Matuka - Olive

The Matuka is a traditional New Zealand streamer designed to imitate small baitfish and other swimming prey. Its defining feature is a feather wing secured along the body with ribbing, which prevents the wing from wrapping around the hook while maintaining movement in the water. The fly is especially effective for trout in rivers and lakes and can be stripped, swung across the current, or retrieved on a sinking line. Matukas can be tied in many colors and sizes to match local forage, making the style highly adaptable. The main tying challenge is winding the rib evenly through the feather fibers without trapping or distorting the wing.
