Leadwing Coachman

The Leadwing Coachman is a traditional winged wet fly and one of the best-known variations of the original Coachman. It is generally considered an attractor, although its gray wings and peacock-herl body can suggest an emerging caddisfly, a diving egg-laying caddis, or other aquatic insects. The pattern is commonly fished across or downstream on a controlled swing, but it can also be dead-drifted through riffles and runs as part of a team of wet flies. It is especially useful when trout are feeding just beneath the surface or during caddis activity. Leadwing Coachmen are typically tied in sizes 8 through 14, and the main tying challenges are forming a durable herl body and mounting the paired wings evenly so the fly tracks properly in the current.
