Grey Ghost
The Grey Ghost is a classic Rangeley-style streamer created by Maine fly tyer Carrie Stevens, generally dated to 1924. Designed primarily to imitate smelt, it became one of the most famous streamer patterns for brook trout, landlocked salmon, and other freshwater predators. The fly can be cast and stripped through lakes and pools, swung across current, or trolled behind a boat. Grey Ghosts are commonly tied on long-shank hooks in larger sizes, with many simplified variations developed over the years. The principal tying challenge is mounting the paired feather wings evenly and securely so the fly remains balanced and tracks properly in the water.
