Fall Favorite
The Fall Favorite is a classic steelhead fly created by Lloyd Silvius of Eureka, California, in 1946 for the fall run on the Eel River. It became a productive searching pattern throughout the West Coast and is especially associated with summer and fall steelhead in low, clear water. The fly is normally cast across and downstream and fished on a controlled swing using a floating line, although a sink tip can be used when fish are holding deeper. Fall Favorites are commonly tied on salmon or steelhead hooks in sizes 2 through 8, with smaller, sparsely dressed versions well suited to cautious fish. Forming a smooth tinsel body, winding an even collar, and keeping the bright wing sparse and properly aligned are the main considerations when tying the pattern.
