Candy Eel

The Candy Eel is a saltwater streamer based on Bob Popovics’s Surf Candy style and designed primarily to imitate sand eels and other slender baitfish. It is especially effective for striped bass, bluefish, bonito, false albacore, and other predators feeding on narrow-profile forage along the Atlantic coast. The fly can be retrieved with quick, erratic strips through feeding fish or worked more slowly beneath schools of bait. Candy Eels are commonly tied in olive, chartreuse, tan, or black over a lighter belly, with different lengths and weights used to match the local bait and fishing depth. Keeping the wing sparse and straight while forming a smooth, durable epoxy or UV-resin body are the main considerations when tying the pattern.
