Blue Charm
The Blue Charm is one of the best-known traditional Atlantic salmon flies. The original feather-wing pattern dates to the nineteenth century and is generally attributed to Scottish fly dresser M. Brown, while later hair-wing versions became popular in North America. It is normally fished on a controlled swing across and downstream, particularly in clear water or when salmon are reluctant to take larger, more heavily dressed flies. Blue Charms can be tied in a wide range of sizes, including sparse low-water versions for warm or shallow conditions. The main tying considerations are maintaining a slim body, keeping the wing properly aligned, and avoiding excessive material that may prevent the fly from swimming correctly.
