Autumn Gold
The Autumn Gold is a traditional attractor pattern used primarily for Pacific salmon and steelhead. It is especially associated with late-summer and fall fishing in the Pacific Northwest, when its warm gold and orange elements provide a strong but relatively subdued profile. The fly is normally cast across and downstream and fished on a controlled swing through runs, pools, and likely holding water. Autumn Golds are commonly tied on salmon hooks in sizes 2 through 8, with larger versions useful in higher or stained water and smaller flies better suited to clear conditions. Forming a smooth body, winding the rib evenly, and keeping the wing sparse and properly aligned are the main considerations when tying the pattern.
