Apte Tarpon Fly
The Apte Tarpon Fly is a classic saltwater pattern developed by legendary Florida Keys angler and guide Stu Apte. Its bright feather construction was designed to create a strong profile and plenty of movement while remaining light enough to cast quickly at approaching tarpon. The fly is typically presented ahead of a cruising fish, allowed to settle into its path, and retrieved with short, deliberate strips. Although created for tarpon, smaller versions can also be effective for redfish, snook, and other inshore predators. The main tying considerations are selecting matched feathers, keeping the pattern balanced, and avoiding excessive bulk that can make the fly difficult to cast.
